To the captain of this vessel,

I should start by saying that I am quite pleased with knowing that there is a stage on board your ship. If given the opportunity, I would like very much to put on a performance of which I am sure you and your crew have never seen before.

But, to business. I am aware that you have a young woman by the name of Christine Daaé as a passenger. This too pleases me greatly, as I am sure you are aware of her musical talents.

My only request is that I be placed as close to her quarters as possible, so that her tutelage may continue without hindrance.

[Even though Christine cannot see him, he looks a little incredulous. This is not possible.]

[He pauses.]

You've been here an entire year? You've been well?

I understand, Angel, and I am quite well now.

[Apart from the three deaths, the various ballet injuries, and the time that Erol beat her so long and hard that she thought he would kill her. But that's all in the past, and even if he sees her eyes, she can think of something, surely, which should suffice if he does not then mention it to someone who knows what they really mean.]

[Don't tell him any of that. Erik is so very jealous protective of Christine and won't stop until he has avenged her.]

[Christine gulps nervously, and when she speaks it doesn't take a genius to work out that she's not being entirely honest. Stupid Erik and his stupid mind-controlling voice that she can't lie to.]

Oh, no! I mean, I was. Of course I was. There is no reason at all why I would not be well, now or any other time.

[His tone has changed. It's low and authoritative. Come on, Christine. Don't make him mad at you.]

[His tone erodes her willpower, and as much as she knows how important it is that Erik doesn't find out about what's happened to her, Christine can feel herself weakening.]
